Project Description

Centrepoint Car Park Expansion, 2007-2008

JMG were engaged to investigate the feasibility of expanding the capacity of a major inner city car park by constructing new decks on top of the existing facility.

This project required substantial amounts of investigative work, leading our client, Hobart City Council, into making financial decisions based on engineering inputs.

The Project

Following a review of the original geotechnical report from 1970, a supplementary investigation was conducted using modern techniques.

Boreholes had to be drilled inside Centrepoint Shopping mall overnight in order not to interfere with the public.  These boreholes established the extent of subsoil formations and position of column foundations.

JMG conducted a total analysis of the structural designs using the new geotechnical information.

Findings

Following an extensive assessment, it was found that the construction of an additional two and a half decks was the most feasible and sensible solution from a structural engineering perspective.

The car park expansion has been completed and is currently in use.
