Project Description
St Michael’s Collegiate Middle School, 2008
The expansion of the St Michael’s Collegiate Middle School on their existing site required innovative architecture and engineering to produce a state of the art modern school facility.
The multi disciplinary engineering team at JMG, together with HBV Architects, designed the addition to the existing Founders’ Hall on the Molle Street campus, between Macquarie and Davey Street in Hobart. Extensive refurbishing of Founders’ Hall formed part of the challenge.
JMG provided Structural, Electrical, Data, Security, Fire detection, Hydraulic and Mechanical engineering services.
Key Issues
– Archaeological ruins found amongst new foundations
– New lift required to service both old and new facilities.
– Designing a modern facility that is compatible with the heritage values of the site and surrounding area.
– Random shape of building footprint on the existing site provided good use of space but also presented challenges for post tensioned slab and roof designs.
