Client: Department of State Growth
Year: commencement 2023
JMG have recently completed the design documentation for the new $43.6m Northern Suburbs Recreation Hub project, which when complete, will deliver Tasmania’s largest multi-purpose community sporting and recreation facility with a building area of over 10,000 square metres of usable indoor space and additional outdoor activities. JMG worked closely with the project Architect, Philp Lighton Architects and the Department of State Growth to deliver the project design on time and under budget. The project will demonstrate how an old industrial site which has been previously considered an eyesore on the local streetscape, can be coverted into a major sporting facility showcase for the state, utilising new and existing buildings and infrastructure.
The Hub is being funded through a three-way partnership between the Tasmanian Government, Australian Government and the City of Launceston, who have jointly committed $43.6 million over the next two years. A major driving force behind the new development centres around the importance of increasing local community engagement and providing positive outcomes for the community’s health and well-being. The space will assist in addressing Launceston's current lack of indoor sports facilities and look to enhance economic growth in the region. The Hub will also provide an essential service for the local area offering all residents a safe location to meet coupled with youth engagement spaces.
The Hub’s new facilities will include:
Four designated indoor courts for netball operated by the Northern Tasmania Netball Association (NTNA).
Three indoor multi-use courts for basketball, volleyball, futsal, table tennis, wheelchair sports and other sporting and community recreational activities to address the current court shortfall.
Rock climbing, gym, boxing and weightlifting facilities.
A designated gymnastics area.
Café, commercial kitchen, and spectator amenities with change room facilities and onsite parking.
Youth engagement, community education and counselling areas.
Multipurpose office and function spaces.
Open space for community gatherings of up to 800 people.
Safe pedestrian access off Invermay Road and connectivity to the Hub from Mowbray Heights Primary School.
Electric charging facilities for vehicles, e-bikes and e-scooters.
